Safeway Inc., a supermarket chain located throughout the western and central United States. It also operates some stores in the Mid-Atlantic region of the Eastern Seaboard. It is part of Albertsons, which acquired the chain in 2014.
Seelig stores was founded in 1912 by Sam Seelig. He opened the store in Los Angeles, CA. In 1925, the chain was renamed 'Safeway.' Skaggs started in 1915, after Skaggs bought his father's grocery store. The grocery store chain grew rapidly after, with the help of Skaggs' brothers. In 1926, Safeway and Skaggs merged. This made Safeway the largest chain west of the Mississippi River. The chain expanded after the merger. After several years, Safeway expanded internationally, by opening stores in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. For thirty years, things seemed fine. But in the 80s, they sold most of their stores. However, in the late 90s, Safeway purchased several regional stores. They included Randalls, Vons, Dominick's and Genuardi's. Safeway has announced it was closing down or selling many divisions, including Genuardi's and Dominick's. Safeway also sold of its Canadian assets. In 2013, there was speculation that Albertsons was thinking about buying Safeway. This was confirmed in 2014, when Albertsons acquired the chain. This created a national supermarket chain, which would strengthen its foothold in the Western United States.
