A Lord & Taylor In Garden City, New York

Lord & Taylor is an upscale department store chain based in New York, New York. Founded in 1826 by Samuel Lord and George Washington Taylor, Lord & Taylor is the oldest upscale-luxury, specialty-retail department store chain in the United States. Lord & Taylor currently operates 38 stores.

History[]

Lord & Taylor was founded by Lord and his wife's cousin Taylor. By 1861, they existed in Broadway. Lord & Taylor always sings the National Anthem on every business day. In 1914, they opened their flagship store. Over the years, they expanded. After several years, Lord & Taylor was bought by May. May tried to make Lord & Taylor a national chain, but May later gave up the idea. Lord & Taylor soon had lost money. However, in 2005, Federated bought May, and Lord & Taylor became part of Federated. However, the chain did not have as much success as Macy's and Bloomingdale's did. So in 2006, Federated sold Lord & Taylor. Now, the chain is part of the Hudson Bay Company.

Liquidation[]

All Lord & Taylor stores have been closed due to COVID-19. At the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, it was stated that many people were laid off from Lord & Taylor stores and Le Tote's headquarters. In late April 2020, it was announced that Lord & Taylor was reportedly considering a bankruptcy filing, and had deleted its Instagram and Twitter accounts amid the rumors. On May 5, 2020, it was announced that once restrictions are lifted and stores can reopen, all 38 stores will go into liquidation.
